Vita

The prosthetics and orthotics (P&O) profession is at a pivotal moment, with global demand for services outpacing the availability of qualified practitioners. ISPO has launched an integrated approach to strengthen and align the global P&O workforce, focusing on professional recognition, competency alignment, and sustainable service delivery.

Key initiatives include the establishment of the P&O Council and collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) on workforce mapping and proper realignment of the P&O occupation within the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO) . Together, these efforts provide a foundation for elevating the status of P&O professionals, shaping regulatory frameworks, and creating pathways for education and practice recognition across diverse health systems.

This symposium, chaired by Sandra Ramdial with presentations from Bryan Malas and Dan Blocka, will showcase ISPO’s leadership in advancing P&O practice “beyond borders.” It will highlight how workforce initiatives enhance recognition of the P&O occupation.
