Where innovations have legs

This year for the first time OTWorld will be supporting start-ups to gain a foothold in the industry: so 2018 will see the premiere of the “Start-Up Zone.” Recently founded companies will be showing innovative developments and services and using their opportunity here to make contact with potential partners and customers.

Digitalisation for footwears

A sole for measuring the stress load on the foot will be showcased by vebitosolution GmbH. Born as an idea in a biomechanics laboratory at Münster Polytechnic, the vebito measurement system is the first to measure the biomechanical stress of the foot. This measurement system includes a specially designed software which portrays the bending and torsion stresses in an easily comprehensible way.

3D technology for scanning, manufacture and optics

The field of digital possibilities is also home to Versoteq 3D Solutions Oy, a Finnish start-up. Its new online platform VersoCore makes it possible to produce 3D models automatically and to produce tailor-made medical products based on biometric information. The Finnish company was founded in 2013 and is offering its software not only to the industry and the retail trade, but to museums, too.

Manometric from the Netherlands have developed a complete 3D package for individually fitted 3D-printed thumb braces. They are exhibiting their 3D hand scanner ManoX, together with the user-friendly software, ManoStudio, that goes with it. The start-up will be hoping to introduce itself to potential partners at OTWorld.

MaxBionic Prostheses Lab, a two-year-old from Moscow, is well versed in the practical application of 3D technology. It will be showcasing a bionic hand prosthesis with built-in microcomputer. The development of the MeHandS product line has come from collaboration with the engineer and prosthesis wearer Maxim Lyashko.

From Moscow comes another young manufacturing company: Motorica have been offering their upper-extremity prosthesis for both children and adults since 2015. They see themselves as being at the interface between medicine and robotics. They are developing a virtual reality platform on the theme of a colony on Mars. Their first public VR demonstration will take place at OTWorld.

The manifold possibilities of 3D printing have also been well exploited by 3D-Design & Produktionsagentur WAKO GmbH from Austria. Founded only last year, it produces and sells brand ce:koon prosthesis covers, which are completely manufactured via a 3D process, offering to orthopaedic technology their wide expert knowledge of 3D technology.

Outlook for amputees

ESKA Orthopaedic Handels GmbH, founded in 2015, is based on a particular commercial focus: the ESKA Endostiel adapted exo-prosthesis provision concept in accordance with Dr. Grundei®. ESKA produces and sells the products needed for the implantation of the prosthesis stem and the linking modules.

PHYSIOTECHNIK Schaffarik GmbH, only founded in January 2018 in Vienna, will be showcasing the MedBoard, a therapy apparatus for the lower extremity, which enables maximum joint movement with concurrent concentric and eccentric muscle training. Its founder, Gregor Schaffarik, is a trained mechatronics engineer for medical-equipment technology and an experienced physiotherapist.

The “Start-Up Zone” will be found in the midst of the show, in Hall 3, Booth D28.
