High-tech Rehabilitation: TAR Conference Expands digital OTWorld.connect

"Target Muscle Reinnervation (TMR)", "Bionic Hand", "Cortical Visual Neuropros-thesis": The 7th European TAR Conference (Technically Assisted Rehabilitation) on 28 and 29 October 2020 will focus on technical progress in rehabilitation. For the first time, this European forum will take place parallel to the OTWorld.connect congress (27 to 29 October) and also exclusively online. The conference, which will be held in English, will focus on the discussion and presentation of the latest technical innovations and assistive technologies in modern rehabilitation. The online format connects a worldwide community of experts in the exchange of information on prostheses and orthoses, functional electrostimulation, neurotechnology, assistive technical systems and rehabilitation robotics.

Aszmann, Micera, Fernández Jover: The TAR Conference programme features three out-standing keynotes presenting the status, development aspects and clinical implementation of cutting-edge research areas such as implantable assistance systems and rehabilitation technology. Prof Dr Silvestro Micera, Scuola Superiore Sant' Anna (Pisa/Italy) and École Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, will speak on results and future perspectives regarding the bionic hand: "The quest for a bionic hand – recent achievements and future perspectives" (28.10.). Among the prominent speakers will also be Prof Dr Oskar Aszmann, Medical University of Vienna, who will highlight the topic of "Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR)" in his keynote speech (29.10.). Another highlight is the lecture "Towards a long-term communication with the brain in the blind – Challenges and future prospects" by Prof Eduardo Fernández Jover, PhD, MD, Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche, Spain (29.10.).

Innovation Clusters Present Results

One of the leaders in this field: For the first time, results of the innovation clusters INOP-RO (Intelligent Orthotics and Prosthetics) and INTAKT (Interactive Microimplants) will be presented at the TAR Conference. The projects funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) aim to improve human-technology interaction (Symposium "Innovation Clusters INOPRO and INTAKT", 29.10.).

Further symposia of the conference will deal with "Assistive Technologies and Prosthetics" (among others with PD Dr-Ing Rüdiger Rupp, Heidelberg University Hospital, Clinic for Paraplegiology/Experimental Neurorehabilitation; 28.10.), "Rehabilitation Robotics and Orthotics" (28.10.) and "Human Technology Interaction" (among others with Prof Dr Frank Braatz, UMG University Medical Center Goettingen, PFH, Private University of Applied Sciences Göttingen; 29.10.).

This ambitious programme of the TAR Conference is supported by the Technical University of Berlin, the Fraunhofer Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBMT) and the German Society for Biomedical Engineering in VDE (DGBMT). Prof Dr-Ing Klaus-Peter Hoffmann (Fraunhofer IBMT, Sulzbach) is responsible for the content of the 7th edition. Conference president is Prof Dr-Ing Marc Kraft (TU Berlin). The international programme committee includes recognised experts such as Prof Robert Riener (ETH Zurich) and Axel Sigmund from the German Association of Orthopaedic Technology.
