Youth.Academy TO

The Youth.Academy TO (Jugend.Akademie Technische Orthopädie) is an initiative for interdisciplinary development of young talent in the field of orthopaedic technology.

The Youth.Academy TO is now traditionally part of OTWorld. In 2020, it will take place for the fifth time at the world's largest industry meeting. In the years of OTWorld, the Youth.Academy TO enables a large number of participants – and a selected group in the interim years – to upskill adapted to their own level of knowledge and to network with one another. The initiative is becoming increasingly international.

This project was initiated by trainees and vocational colleges from the orthopaedic technology sector (ALLOF e. V.), the conceptual partner is the German Association of Orthopaedic Technology (Bundesinnungsverband für Orthopädie-Technik).

THIS WAS THE Y.A TO 2018 ...

trainees and students from the fields of orthopaedic technology, orthopaedic footwear technology, physiotherapy and medicine from 7 countries

2 days

of comprehensive programme at the trade show and the congress true to the motto: Learn Together, Exchange Ideas, Have Fun!

Review 2018

On 17 and 18 May, the halls of the OTWorld trade show and congress welcomed once again trainees and students from all over the world as part of the Youth.Academy TO. This year, around 550 participants from 7 countries benefitted from an exciting programme.

The first day started off with a warm welcome by Olaf Kelz (Chairman of the Vocational Training Committee of the BIV-OT) at the meeting point of the Youth.Academy TO in the glass hall of the Leipzig Fair and Exhibition Centre. Afterwards everyone set out to visit various lectures, workshops and exhibition stands in three exhibition halls. The sponsors were also very busy offering the participants customised guided booth tours, exhibitor workshops and additional inspiring activities. After a quick lunch exchanging insights with fellow trainees at the meeting point, the second leg of trade show attendance, lectures and workshops kicked off. In the evening, the big barbecue party in the Pocketpark and the glass hall marked the end of the first day. Thus, Klaus-Jürgen Lotz (President of the German Association of Orthopaedic Technology), Prof. Dr. Volker Bühren (OTWorld Congress President in 2018) and Norbert Aumann (Managing Director of Otto Bock Healthcare Germany) donned their cooking jackets, treating the young professionals to hot sausages from the barbecue. This setting provided excellent opportunities for the participants to engage in conversation with fellow trainees as well as with the sponsors.

The second day opened with courses in the World Congress on a broad variety of topics, equipping the trainees with plenty of practical knowledge for their daily work. Following some refreshments at the meeting point, in the afternoon the time had come to bid good-bye, departing with a wealth of new impressions. We would like to take this opportunity to give a big thanks to all sponsors, without whom these two magnificent days would not have been possible!

The starting signal for the Youth.Academy TO was given in 2012. A specially set up working group constituted of representatives of BIV-OT, ALLOF e. V., member companies and the industry was tasked with designing the comprehensive training and development programme as well as the framework of the initiative in cooperation with the Confairmed GmbH.

Also in the interim years in which OTWorld does not take place, the Youth.Academy TO organises excursions, such as the visit to the event “Tag der Technischen Orthopädie” at the German Congress for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery (DKOU) in 2017. On this occasion, the participants took advantage of the congress programme following engaging lectures, and also benefitted from a specially designed social programme.
