We tested the extent to which a microclimate cushion cover with active airflow can help wheelchair users manage their microclimate more effectively and found that with permeable cushions the microclimate cover was effective in optimizing the microclimate of wheelchair users.

13/05/2022 1:00 PM - 2:15 PM Lecture scientific case study/P&O case

This case study shows how a microclimate backrest with active airflow can significantly improve the quality of life of a 47-year old male who is a quadruple amputee. The individual is now able to use his myoelectric prosthesis more often and live more independently.

Pressure ulcers in wheelchair users are caused by shear stress. We investigated the kinetic coefficient of friction (COF) of 5 wheelchair seats. The lowest COF measured (0.35-0.4) was still too high. We recommend a very low COF surface combined with a concave seat to reduce the ulcer risk.
