Abstract:

Ulcerated diabetic feet are not only a burden to the patient, but also to the treatment team and the health care system. Conservative therapy with insoles, shoes and orthoses often fails because of marked deformities which are the cause of ulcers due to high pressure. In those cases surgery may be the only way to achieve pressure reduction by means of deformity correction. Developing techniques and better comprehension of the nature of the disease present the prospect of an improved risk-benefit profile.
